It's an age-old concept and for thousands of years, one that has inspired poets, writers, and artists. Now the medical community is beginning to notice.

The question is simple: Do those with close personal relationships - specifically marriage - have better health?

As it turns out, folks who have a strong, healthy marriage heal faster. And that's true for both physical and mental wounds. New research by scientists at Ohio State University indicates the influence of love can reduce healing time by as much as 40 percent!

In another study by UK scientists from the University of Birmingham, there is evidence that happily married couples also have a much higher immunity against disease. The study showed increased disease-fighting antibodies - especially in couples over 65 years of age - as compared to their single or unhappily married counterparts.

Additional studies from researchers at the University of North Carolina have also discovered that stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine drop significantly when couples are in physical contact.  For example, couples who enjoy a twenty-second "hug" experience reduced stress and a greater sense of well-being. It's now believed these hormonal benefits have a direct beneficial effect on cardiac health, and contribute to the increased longevity and better overall health enjoyed by married couples.

Here's the big question: Does an "intimacy connection" have to come from a spouse? Fortunately, no. Those who have lost their partner can experience many of the same benefits by developing and maintaining close friendships. Participating in social activities, church groups, and other "people-rich" activities can help generate a positive attitude and the motivation to take better care of themselves.

We connect with a large part of our world through others, often relying on our mate (or close friends) as a conduit to see, feel, and understand our lives more clearly. Because a world shared is definitely a better place to be.
